“Mary’s work adds a whole new dimension to the phrase ‘nature lover’. I’ve always enjoyed the ‘great outdoors’, but Mary’s use of metaphor has opened me to a whole new way of seeing the planet and my place in it.”
- Linda A. Curtis
“Mary Thompson’s poetry workshops on the spiritual connections between inner and outer landscapes were very valuable to my creative process. Her work is exciting and fresh, a celebration of the soul and an enthusiastic invitation to chart the worlds we inhabit.”Victoria Joyce
Mary is an author, facilitator of poetry and journal therapy, and certified life coach who helps people discover and live their Wild Soul Story so they can bridge the false divide between outer and inner nature, Earth and Self, and become fully creative, connected and alive.
A long-time lover of language, her first career was as a copywriter and branding expert. She scoured dictionaries for images and metaphors that could sell everything from cars to cosmetics. But early in 2000, her soul protested, she knew she was being called to explore language in a more sacred way.
Today her work is a unique blend of poetry and journal therapy, Earth connection, and coaching that helps her students and clients reclaim their wild souls in order to live from their deepest, wildest selves. Her work connects people to nature—and their own inner nature––through what she calls “wild language”—the way the Earth speaks to us in metaphors and symbols about our lives and purpose.
Mary fell in love with the wild as a very young girl, when she rode a pig called Romana through the hills above Positano in southern Italy. Since then, she has roamed the farthest reaches of the planet, from the heights of Himalayas to the tip of Tierra del Fuego deepening her connection to the sacred Earth. This connection has been key to her thirty-year successful recovery from alcoholism and grounds her in an understanding of how we can all awaken from the addictive trance of the modern world.
As well as her Wild Soul work, Mary is founder of Write the Damn Book, a program that guides writers on the heroic journey from procrastination to publication. She is also core faculty for the Therapeutic Writing Institute, the leading training institute for practitioners in the field of therapeutic writing.
Mary has taught for the International Women’s Writing Guild, National Association of Poetry Therapy, The Women’s Writing Experience, The Green and Wild Festival, and Expressive Therapies Summit, and many other conferences. Her own retreats, classes, and workshops are delivered both in the States and Internationally.
A fresh voice in the eco-spirituality movement, her essays have appeared in numerous publications, including The Ecozoic, LeftCurve, and SageWoman. Her first book Embrace Your Inner Wild was nominated as best nature book, 2011. Reclaiming the Wild Soul: How Earth’s Landscapes Restore Us to Wholeness has received advanced praise from Richard Louv, Angeles Arrien and David Abram, among others.
Born in London, England, Mary now lives in her beloved landscape of Marin County, California, with her husband, Bruce.
